Welcome to Starving Soubrette! This page will answer a few questions you may have and let you know what you’re getting into
Who am I?
My name is Lauren, I’m a Canadian opera singer in the second year of my master’s degree. I’ve wanted to be an opera singer since I was 7 and it still kind of blows my mind that I get to be one and sometimes people even pay me to do it! I live in Halifax (right now) with my boyfriend and my cat. We are definitely starving artists and let me tell you, it’s not nearly as romantic as it sounds. When I’m not singing, I like to play video games, read books, and drink tea. You can find my professional page here

What is a Soubrette?
The Oxford Dictionary of Music defines a Soubrette as a “Light soprano taking rather pert roles in opera and operetta such as Despina in Così fan tutte, Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Adèle in Die Fledermaus, etc.” (aka: Sassy Peasant Girls). I’m not 100% sure if that is what I would define my voice type as (because who is really 100% sure about that stuff?) but they are my favourite roles. I wish I could have half the confidence those wonderful ladies (and sometimes gentlemen) have.
What is this blog about anyway?
One day, when I was feeling down about where my life was going, I found a picture of me from when I was in high school and realized that 13 year-old me would think that 23 year-old me was living the dream. Here I am with my own apartment in a cool city, my very own cat and even a BOYFRIEND! (Seriously, 13 year old me thought that I would die alone). Not only that, but I am actively pursuing a career in music, something that I’ve wanted to do all my life. So yes, even though I am not quite where I want to be professionally and I am super poor, there is so much in my life to celebrate. This blog is where I will celebrate them and share my journey to make the rest of my life worthy of celebration.
Where is all the discussion about “the industry?”
I probably won’t discuss the industry too much because there are other people who are doing it much more eloquently then I ever could. You can find a list of great blogs for that here. I do sometimes discuss that stuff on my twitter feed but this blog is going to be a lot more about the lifestyle of a classical musician than the profession.
There is a Tumblr with the same name as your blog
That’s me! A previous blogging incarnation.
