It’s a new year and we are all making resolutions. While I have a bunch of personal goals and resolutions, I also have a list of TTRPG Specific resolutions that I’m going to break down here.

Write my series on Romance

I love Love, and including sex and romance in my games. I have quite a bit of experience with it and think that I could share some good stuff about how to do it in a safe and fun way. It was originally gonna be one article, but I have more to say than that, so it watch out for this new series!

Submit to the 200 word RPG challenge

This is one of my smaller, more manageable resolutions. I have a game written and it just needs some editing before the Challenge goes live in the spring.

90% Wholesome Games

The world is dark and I have bleed problems. I’m tired of dark games where things are hard and I spend week to week stressing out about fictional dread when I have plenty of real life dread. So this year I want almost all of my games to be happy. Bad things will still happen probably, but the aim will be brighter, my characters will do good and we will win.

I say 90% because sometimes it’s fun to explore darker or sadder themes in safe spaces, and my core gaming friends love that #drama. but I did too much of it in 2018 so I’m gonna aim to over-correct for the new year and hopefully balance things out.

No New Longterm Campaigns*

*until one of my current ones finish. This is likely the one I’m going to break first, but I’m currently playing in 6 long term campaigns and I am trying to make space for other things in my life, so I’m going to try not to take on more. (I may have already broken this once but we’ll keep trying!)

Speak Up for Myself and My Needs

I have been having a lot of good conversations around safety in ttrpgs and about setting and respecting boundaries in my life. These are really the same thing and I spent a lot of time in 2018 ignoring my needs for the benefit of others and not setting proper boundaries. I’m going to try to stop that this year. I’m going to express when and why I am uncomfortable in a game, I am not going to let people interrupt me, and- this is going to be the hardest- I am going to make sure that my evening games end on time, because I need to sleep.

Play Alone More

There are a lot of cool solo games out there, and I wanna try them out. I’d like to start streaming solo games some time in the new year, so I can show off some of these experiences.

Play More Games with Ethan (@superrobotbear) Where We are Both Players

my best friend and podcast co-host Ethan met in the end of 2017 playing a game of Mouse Guard. Since then, I can think of exactly 2 other times we’ve both be players. Every other time we have been GMing for each other. I wanna play more characters with him.

Play with New People

I have a lot friends in the Tabletop community now and it’s wonderful, but I play with maybe 10 of them on a regular basis and the rest I’ve never played with. I want to change that this year. I love my core circle of friends, and I will keep playing with them, but I want to have new experiences with more people and play games with people I love talking about games with.

Play Systems I Like With People I Like

It didn’t happen too much last year, but every so often I’d put up with playing a system I didn’t enjoy, or with a player whose style I didn’t mesh with because I wanted to play with my friends. I am lucky enough to have so much opportunity to play games with people that I am going to try my best to only say yes to experiences I am 100% on board with. Both system and players at the table, because my fun is important too.

So that’s it, those are my 2019 TTRPG resolutions! They feel pretty manageable and centered around making sure I have the best possible experience while playing, along with sharing and learning new things. Which I think is all we can really hope for.
